“长”在树上的东西需要用介词on，而不属于树的一部分但是停在树上的要用in。
鸟在树上用in，苹果在苹果树上用on
There are two apples on the tree.
树上结了两个苹果。苹果是长在树上的，用on the tree.
There are two sparrows in the tree.
树上有两只麻雀。麻雀是外来物，不是属于树原本的一部分，用 in the tree.
